Hotels near Heraklion Airport (HER)

There is no hotel inside the terminal at Heraklion Airport, and none attached to it. The closest beds are in Nea Alikarnassos, the suburb the airport sits beside, a few minutes by car. Central Heraklion is about 5 km west, which is 10 to 15 minutes by taxi, and the beach strip at Ammoudara is around 10 km. For a dawn departure that geography matters more than the star rating: anything in Heraklion or Nea Alikarnassos puts you at the desk inside 20 minutes.

Is there a hotel at Heraklion Airport?

No. HER has one terminal and no airport hotel, no transit hotel and no sleeping pods inside security. If your flight leaves before the first buses run, you either book a room in town or wait in the terminal, which is not built for comfortable overnight stays.

The upside of a compact airport close to a real city is that you do not pay an airport-hotel premium. The whole city is a short ride away, so you get city prices and city restaurants instead of a business hotel by a runway.

Which area to book

Four areas cover almost every reason to stay near HER. Road distances and typical driving times, without traffic:

• Nea Alikarnassos, next to the airport. The suburb immediately west of the runway. Mostly apartments, studios and small family-run properties rather than resorts. Cheapest way to be genuinely close, and the right pick for a 05:00 flight.
• Heraklion city centre, about 5 km, 10 to 15 minutes. The widest choice at every price point, plus the Venetian harbour, the market streets and the archaeological museum within walking distance of each other. Best if you have an evening to spend before flying.
• Ammoudara, about 10 km, roughly 13 minutes. Beach suburb just west of the city with resort-style hotels and a long sandy beach. A reasonable compromise if you want a swim on your last day.
• The eastern resorts. Hersonissos is about 22 km and 25 minutes, Malia about 32 km and 35 minutes, Agios Nikolaos about 60 km and an hour, Elounda about 68 km and an hour. These are holiday bases, not airport bases.

Further afield, Rethymno is 80 km, an hour by car but well over two by public bus, and Chania is 135 to 145 km, close to two hours by road. Neither works as a place to sleep before an early flight from HER.

Staying the night before an early flight

Work backwards from the desk, not from the runway. If you want to be at check in three hours before a 06:00 departure, you are leaving your hotel around 02:30, when city buses are not running and taxi supply is thin.

• Book in Nea Alikarnassos or eastern Heraklion so the ride is 10 minutes rather than 40.

• Ask about a night porter. Small properties in the suburb lock reception overnight, so confirm someone will be there when you check out.
• Ask for breakfast to go. Many places will leave a bag if you tell them the night before.

Arriving late at night

Late arrivals are the other half of the problem, and easier. Taxis meet flights until the last arrival, so a room in the city is reachable whenever you land. What catches people out is the hotel, not the transport: budget properties often stop check in at 22:00 or midnight unless you warn them.

Send your flight number and landing time when you book, then again on the day if you are delayed. If your arrival slips past midnight, a property with 24 hour reception is worth the extra euros over one that leaves a key in a box.

Getting between your hotel and the airport

Four ways, and the right one depends on the hour rather than the price:

• Taxi, about 19 euro to the city by day and about 22 at night, 10 to 15 minutes. Worth it with heavy bags or at an awkward hour.

What to check before you book

Proximity to a runway has consequences, and booking sites do not volunteer them:

• Aircraft noise. HER is the second busiest airport in Greece and traffic starts early. Ask which side the room faces and whether windows are glazed for noise.
• Actual distance, not the label. Properties describe themselves as airport hotels from several kilometres away. Filter by distance and check the map pin rather than the name.
• Whether a shuttle exists. Free hotel shuttles are the exception at HER, not the rule. If a listing mentions one, confirm the hours: a service that starts at 08:00 is useless for a 06:00 flight.
• Cancellation terms. Flights to Crete shift in summer. A refundable rate for one night is cheap insurance.
• Where you leave your bags. If you check out in the morning but fly at night, the airport has a left-luggage office. See luggage storage rather than dragging cases around town.

When staying near the airport is the wrong choice

Being close is not always the point:

• Your flight is in the afternoon. Sleep where you actually want to be, in the old town or by the sea, and travel in the morning.
• You have a full free day. Nea Alikarnassos is a residential suburb. There is little to do there compared with the harbour and the museums.
• You are heading east on arrival. If your holiday is in Hersonissos or Malia, go straight there. Sleeping in Heraklion adds a leg rather than saving one.
• You booked a package. Your transfer is already arranged and timed to your flight, so an airport-side room buys nothing.
