First time at Heraklion Airport?
Six simple steps from kerbside to boarding gate — the way locals do it.
- STEP 01
Arrive 3 hours before non-Schengen, 2 hours for Schengen flights
The airport is about 5 km east of the city — 10–20 minutes by taxi or bus — but allow extra time for summer traffic and queues.
- STEP 02
Find your check-in desk
HER has a single passenger terminal. Check your airline’s desk on the flight-information screens at the entrance.
- STEP 03
Drop bags & get your boarding pass
Use online check-in or a self-service kiosk, then bag drop. Carry-on must fit your airline’s size limit (often around 55×40×23 cm).
- STEP 04
Security & passport control
Have passport and boarding pass ready. Liquids ≤100 ml in a clear 1L bag, laptops in a separate tray. Non-Schengen flights also clear passport control.
- STEP 05
Walk to your gate — it’s a short walk
HER has one compact, single-level terminal, so the gate is only a short walk from security — just follow the signs.
- STEP 06
Boarding starts before departure
Listen for announcements and have your boarding pass and ID ready. Gates typically close 20–30 minutes before departure.
